Common House Rule Variations in Hong Kong Mahjong
Sep 25, 2026 · 4 min read

One distinctive feature of Hong Kong Mahjong is that there's no single official body standardizing its rules (unlike Chinese Official) -- every family, club, or region can have its own house-rule variation.
Variations You'll Often Encounter
- Limit Hand -- a maximum point cap for a single hand, no matter how much fan it's worth (this varies between groups).
- Kong Bonus Rules -- some groups award instant points every time someone Kans, regardless of the hand's final outcome.
- Flower Tile Rules -- some use the 8 flower tiles as instant bonus points, others don't use them at all.
- Chicken Hand Allowed or Not -- as covered in another article, some groups allow winning with zero fan, others require at least 1 fan.
- Double Payment on Self-Draw -- some groups double the payment when winning via Tsumo, others don't.
Because the variation is so wide, the best habit is to always ask "whose rules are we using" before playing with a group you haven't played with before.
