Chanta and Junchan Yaku: A Terminal in Every Set
Sep 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Chanta ("half-terminal hand") requires EVERY set (including the pair) to contain at least one terminal tile (1 or 9) OR an honor tile. It's worth 2 han closed, 1 han open.
Junchan: The Purer Version
Junchan has the same requirement but WITHOUT allowing any honor tiles at all -- it has to be purely terminals in every set. Being stricter, Junchan is worth more: 3 han closed, 2 han open.
Tips for Chasing Chanta/Junchan
The only valid sequences for Chanta/Junchan are 1-2-3 and 7-8-9 (since a terminal must be included) -- a middle sequence like 4-5-6 instantly breaks the requirement. So steer your hand toward edge tiles early if you're chasing this yaku.

An example Chanta hand -- every set (and the pair) contains a terminal or an honor tile.
Chanta is often a "free" bonus yaku when your hand already leans toward terminals anyway -- for example while chasing Toitoi with triplets of terminal/honor tiles.
